Shells represents one of the anciest and most natural wind instruments.
sea and fishing communities all over th eworld used shells during fishing
rituals. In many places of the world shells are still in use as musical
instruments/ in Puja shells are used in hinduist temples in India and
by the Tibetan Buddhist monks during ritual dance.
shell have traditionally been used as instrument in the Mediterranean
area, in India, in Tibet, in Mongolia, in Malaysia, Polinesia, New Zeland,
fast all over America, in madagascar.
However Shellvibes usage of shells is completely different from
those ancient experiences. Shellvibes considers potentalities and limits
of each shell, combine them in a polyfonic texture and weave it with other
acoustic instrument.
Shellvibes takes us into a suggestive musicaljourney throughout
different cultures,paying a tribute to various artists and filled with
culural and musical references: Afro-Brasilian rituals- Candomblé
(Jemania), vocal polyphony from the African pigmy, the calypso and the
Balkan brass bands, (kokkarina), India (Dinna Dindinna), Celtic mythos
(Tire nam beo). Moreover Shellvibes pays a tribute to various characters
from novels of well kwown writers like Italo Calvino, Pennac andTom Robbins
.
Nijen Antonio Coatti got a group of excellent musicians together, most
of them coming from different experiencies, some with similar interest
in improvisation and experimental jazz, ethnic and contemporary music:
